There was a little bit of controversy in terms of the girls not looking like the actual TLC, did you ever worrying if their hair styles would be an issue on the screen?
Not really because when you’re portraying someone else a lot of times they don’t look exactly like the person that we’re trying to create. I was very confident in creating the looks for the girls. I had already worked with Keke in the past so I had already had a plan of attack for her look. With Lil Mama, when I met her she was totally blonde and of course she has those very light eyes. When I checked out her hair and put my hands through it and combed it out it worked out that her natural length was just like Left Eye’s. Drew Sidora has a nice amount of hair. I braided up the top of her hair, because we had a lot of different types of hair because T-Boz had all those different types of haircuts and hair colors. Read Full Article
ST: Drew Sidora’s look definitely took the most time cutting and coloring. I used 7 to 8 different wigs throughout taping to re-create T-Boz’s haircuts and different shades of blonde throughout the eras. Lil Mama on the other hand, was the most complicated, but the most fun. There would be times when the entire team would be working on her head at one time. Especially when we had to re-create Left-Eye’s unique Grammy and VMA looks with the long ponytails and balls. Read Full Article
SWB: Found out from a very viable source you opt to do your own hair while on set. Why is this?
EB: When I can, I do. Oftentimes stylists on set have no idea that I have natural hair before they see me. (I have seen the gambit of reactions to this discovery – some funny, some offensive.) And many of them have zero experience working with natural hair. Once I realized this was common I decided to always come on set with my hair prepped or already done, especially if I am only shooting for one day. In the case of Footloose, which I shot over 5 weeks, I worked with a wonderful stylist named Shunika Terry. She herself is naturally curly so she understood how to work with my hair. It was a huge relief to have her on set! We worked together and shared tips and tricks on how to achieve the looks we wanted. Read Full Article
